In America the corresponding period is referred to as the Old West and was basically 1865 after the Civil War until 1895.
Did you know… How different clothing measurements were in the Victorian era – as a matter of fact all the way until the 1930’s? Changes in posture, undergarments were a big part of the changes in clothing measurements but standard sizing was not developed until much later into the 20thCentury! Clothing sizes were based on the average size by age so - sizes were typically size 6 for 6 year olds, size 8 for 8 year olds and so forth. Misses’ sizes were intended for the adolescent girls, typically 12-18 or 14-20 years. “Women’s” size range was intended for the fuller-figured persons and largely based on the shoulder and back measurements - due to the importance of posture. That meant a lot of alterations were expected for the chest, bust and waist areas!
During the late 1800's and early 1900's, slender women were proud to say that they could still fit into a size 18!
