It was also quite common on enlisted men in both Union and Confederate Armies because neither army issued vests as well as in the Old West.
In a soldier's case, the vest was usually brought from home or procured from a local dry goods store. Officer's purchased their vests from military clothiers.
This shawl style is more open in the front and shows off the shirt and cravat better.
Made from civilian lighter weight wools and other fabrics, this shawl collar vest features two front welted pockets and the shawl style collar. Two collar styles are available: Partial and Full. The full collar wraps around the back of the neck and is usually visible above the coat collar if a coat is worn. The partial collar only extends to the shoulders.
Five cloth covered buttons are sewn on the front, and the back is adjustable by means of a belt and buckle. Lining is Natural Cotton, back and adjustable back belt is cotton.
